Donation checks may have been stolen from charity's mailbox

CHAMPAIGN — A local faith-based agency that ministers to families in need may have had donation checks stolen from its mailbox last week.

Officials from Salt & Light, 1512 W. Anthony Drive, reported on Monday that they have reason to believe someone may have stolen mail out of their mailbox on Dec. 19.

“Because of this, we wanted to encourage anyone who mailed a check to us last week to monitor their account information in case of any potential fraud,” said Nathan Montgomery, executive director of the Salt & Light charity.

“We have since replaced our mailbox with one that locks to prevent this from happening in the future.”

Anyone who mailed a check to Salt & Light can contact the ministry at (217) 355-5654 or via email at nathan@saltandlightministry.org to confirm receipt of their donation.

"Our prayer is that whoever did this was simply looking for cash, and that those who have given so generously to the work at Salt & Light would not be negatively affected,” Montgomery said.
