Something to get you going today, courtesy executive editor Jim Rossow:

New Year's resolution anyone?

Karen Myers of Mahomet has a goal in mind, which she shared with us earlier this week in our lobby. In Sunday's News-Gazette, we'll show you what 18 other readers jotted down on our white board.

What's your resolution? Let us know at our News-Gazette Facebook page.

From one John G. to another

Just because he's given the UI a $5 million gift toward the renovation of State Farm Center doesn't mean John Giuliani gets to call plays for John Groce.

"They're both John Gs and they do have a bond, but I'm sure John Giuliani knows his limits," UI athletic director Mike Thomas said Friday night from Chicago. "Although John Groce probably would let him do it. He's that kind of guy."

Giuliani is a big-time fan of Groce's program. He joined Thomas at last Saturday's Braggin' Rights thriller in St. Louis. Did the Illini's last-second win convince Giuliani to fork over all that money?

"The deal was sealed months before that," Thomas said, "but a win like that sure made it nice."

Radio lineup

Thomas makes his weekly appearance at 9 a.m. today on WDWS 1400-AM's "Saturday SportsTalk" with Steve Kelly and Loren Tate.

Other guests include former Illini assistant and UIC head coach Jimmy Collins (9:20), recruiting expert Brad Sturdy (9:45), Flyin' Illini reunion coordinator Rod Cardinal (10), WGN's Dan Roan (10:20) and UI offensive coordinator Bill Cubit (10:30). To chime in, call 217-356-9397.
