Coroner: Child died from head trauma

URBANA — An autopsy performed Thursday indicates that a 2-year-old Decatur boy died earlier this week in Urbana from blunt-force trauma.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Thursday evening that preliminary autopsy findings showed that Dominic Bradley died from blunt trauma of the head.

“Final diagnoses are pending further studies and toxicology results,” Northrup said in a written release.

Dominic was initially admitted to Decatur Memorial Hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home in the 900 block of West King Street in Decatur at 11:05 p.m. Monday.

Police were sent to that address following a report of a child who was unresponsive and spitting up blood. He was later transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead at 7:06 p.m. Tuesday.

Following the incident, police arrested Manuel W. Gonzales, the live-in boyfriend of the child’s mother, on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery of a child. He is being held in the Macon County Jail on $750,000 bond.

The death continued to be investigated by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Decatur Police Department.
