The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning until noon Tuesday.
Areas affected include Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt and Vermilion counties.
A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values.
Northwesterly winds will continue to gust from 30 to 35 mph overnight, with strong winds and fresh snowfall resulting in drifting snow.
Temperatures are expected to plummet overnight.
Wind chill values from 35 below zero to 40 below zero could be reached late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The bitter wind chill temperatures can rapidly produce frostbite and could lead to hypothermia.
