Plans for improvements on 74-57 interchange progressing

After months of complaints about accidents and a lack of funding, improvements are now taking shape on the Interstate 74-Interstate 57 interchange in Champaign County.

County Board Chairman Al Kurtz said signs have been put up telling people to slow down.  And he said in the spring, the exits are slated to be resurfaced.

Kurtz added that county officials and the Illinois Department of Transportation are still discussing a $70 million project that would completely restructure the interchange.

Kurtz said the study on how to restructure the interchange should be complete this summer or fall.  If everyone signs off on the project, Kurtz said he hoped funding can be secured within a year, with construction taking place over the next few years.
