DeLand village president sentenced

MONTICELLO — The DeLand village president was sentenced last month to a year of court supervision after pleading guilty to battery.

The charge against Gregory Allen, 43, stemmed from a fight he allegedly got in at the Piatt County Forest Preserve in DeLand on Aug. 30 during the DeLand homecoming celebration.

The victim told the Piatt County sheriff's office that he and Allen were arguing about their children and that Allen hit him in the face as he was seated in his car.

Court records show Allen pleaded guilty on Dec. 17 to the Class A misdemeanor before Piatt County Judge Rick Broch. If he successfully completes the year of court supervision, he will have no record of a conviction. He was also fined $500.

His trial on that charge and a resisting a peace officer charge had initially been scheduled for this week.
