Area history, Jan. 13, 2014

Today is Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. On this day:

In 1914, the Anti-Saloon League of America will be in Champaign for two days this week, leading big rallies in support of the Sheppard-Hobson bill that calls for an amendment to the Constitution to outlaw all alcohol in the United States.

In 1964, Sunday's snowstorm was "probably the worst blizzard since the turn of the century," according to state climatologist Stanley Changnon. Champaign-Urbana was hit with 7.8 inches of snow and wind speeds averaging 24.1 mph. The highest gusts were 45 mph. Only twice since 1900 has more snow fallen on the area.

In 1999, some Champaign County Board members seem to like a plan to provide as much as $50,000 to lure jet service back to Willard Airport, but the board's budget and finance committee voted only to support a resolution that pledged the county to "support Willard Airport promotions to the best of our ability."
