State committee nearing plan to change education funding

A Central Illinois lawmaker is hoping a proposal emerges soon to make funding for schools more fair.

Republican Senator Jason Barickman of Bloomington is a member of the Education Funding Advisory Committee, which has been meeting since August and has its final scheduled meeting on Monday.

The goal, Barickman said, is to take a plan to the legislature that would change the school funding formula to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake.  Barickman said that applies, in particular, to upstate vs. downstate schools.

Barickman added that one of the things the committee is looking at is which funding needs should or should not be included in the state formula.  He points to transportation funding as an example.

In addition to committee members, Monday's meeting is scheduled to include comments from Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and state School Superintendent Chris Koch.
