Updated: five charged in Urbana robbery, carjacking

Five men have been charged in connection with an attack on two Urbana men early Sunday morning.

Urbana Police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said the suspects beat two men who had been sitting in a pickup truck in the 1600 block of Hunter Street at around 3 a.m. Sunday.  The suspects then robbed the two men, and at least one of them drove off in the pickup truck.  It was found abandoned a few blocks away.

Lt. Seraphin said a canine unit from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office tracked the suspects from the truck to an apartment near the location of the attack. He said police found cash and the victim's cellphone in the apartment. Two handguns were also recovered.

The five men were arrested less than five hours later and made their first court appearance Monday on armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking charges.  They are 21 year-old William Ayres, 19 year-old Robert Grady, 19 year-old Zachary Gray and 21 year-old Herbert Shah, all of Urbana, and 19 year-old Andrew Bell of Champaign.  Bond for each was set at $250,000.

Lt. Seraphin said the two victims suffered cuts and bruises, but declined medical treatment.
