Former RTHS teacher arraigned over texts

URBANA — A former Rantoul Township High School teacher accused of sending nude photos of himself to a teen is due back in court Feb. 18.

Bryan Reynolds, 26, of Savoy, was arraigned Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court on two charges filed last month alleging distribution of harmful material, a Class 4 felony.

The charges allege conduct that occurred in December 2012 with a male who was under 18 at the time. He has since turned 19.

Reynolds had been employed as a music teacher and band director at the Rantoul school for four years before being suspended Nov. 29 and fired two weeks later.

Reynolds was sent a summons to come to court Tuesday and appeared with his Urbana attorney, Brett Olmstead. He remains free on bond.

Judge John Kennedy ordered Reynolds to have no contact with the alleged victim.

Although the criminal charges allege that Reynolds sent two naked pictures of himself to the student on Dec. 11, 2012, a letter sent to Reynolds by the high school board said he was being fired for sending texts from November 2012 through the end of January 2013.

The letter said the texts included "explicit sexual conduct and nude images of you and other individuals."

If convicted of the Class 4 felonies, Reynolds faces penalties ranging form probation to one to three years in prison.
