Monticello businessman's death under investigation

MONTICELLO — Piatt County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a 31-year-old Monticello man who died at his business early Saturday morning.

Steven Smith, the owner of Smith Auto and Tire, was found in an office area of the business at 600A Bridge St. about 6:30 a.m., according to law enforcement officials. Police, medical, fire and police personnel were called to the scene and performed CPR, but Smith was declared dead a short time later.

"The state police crime lab was called in to help with the investigation," said Piatt County Sgt. J.D. Russell, who said there were no outward signs of trauma on Smith. "Evidence was gathered, and an autopsy was conducted."

The area where Smith was found is undergoing renovations, added Russell.

Investigators are now waiting for toxicology results. Piatt County Coroner Troy Dunn is also assisting with the investigation.
