Woman robs taxi driver

URBANA — Urbana police are looking for a diminutive woman who robbed a taxi driver at knifepoint in that city Tuesday night.

Detective Dave Smysor said a 38-year-old Champaign man who drives for Orange Taxi came to the police department just before 10 p.m. to report that a woman had robbed him of cash minutes earlier.

The driver said he had picked up the fare in the 600 block of Crescent Drive in Champaign and was told by the woman to drive to the area of Lincoln Square Mall. As he neared Main and McCullough streets, the woman began giving him directions to turn on random streets and eventually told him to pull behind a building.

Once there — the driver couldn't give an exact location — the woman pulled out a Bowie knife, placed it against his neck and demanded cash. The driver gave her between $25 and $30 and she ran off.

Smysor said the driver described the woman as black, about 5 feet tall, weighing about 90 pounds. She was wearing a black jacket and had a dark cloth around her neck.

Anyone with information is asked to call Urbana police at 217-384-2320 or Crimestoppers at 217-373-8477. Information may also be sent anonymously online at http://www.373tips.com or by cellphone text message by sending CCTIP plus the information to CRIMES (274637).

Crimestoppers will pay a reward if the information leads to an arrest. Cash rewards are also paid for information on other felony crimes or fugitives in the Champaign County area.

Well the article did say she was "diminutive"....I guess that makes it less of a crime.
