Bement sandwich shop robbed

BEMENT — Piatt County Sheriff's officials are investigating a robbery at knifepoint that occurred at the Subway sandwich shop in Bement shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

"A white male subject entered the Subway, had a knife, jumped over the counter and asked the Subway clerk to get all the money out. It didn't take long — he was in and out pretty quickly," said Piatt County Sheriff David Hunt.

The robber took cash and ran off, but Hunt was not sure if he had a vehicle waiting in the area of the restaurant, at 133 N. Macon St.

The man is described as a white male between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 10 tall, heavyset and wearing a dark jacket, camouflage hat and jeans.

"If anyone was in the area, saw any suspicious vehicle, or a person fitting the description walking to a car, that would be helpful information," said Piatt County Sgt. J.D. Russell. Tips should be called to the sheriff's department at 217-762-5761.

State police crime scene investigators were called to the scene. Law enforcement officials are also reviewing video surveillance footage.

The Bement Subway opened in February of 2013.
