Head Start director earns regional award
URBANA — Champaign County Head Start/Early Head Start Director Kathleen Liffick has been named administrator of the year by the Region V Head Start Association Administrator.
Liffick recently received the award at the regional conference in Chicago. The Region V Head Start Association includes Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.
Liffick was the only administrator chosen for the award from the 278 Head Start/Early Head Start programs within Region V.
In addition, Liffick will also receive the Illinois Head Start Association Administrator of the Year award in March.
The national awards, for which Liffick has been nominated, will be announced late spring 2014.
Liffick said that, when she joined Champaign County Head Start program in 1998, classroom locations included Broadmeadow School in Rantoul, a site at Interstate Research Park in Champaign and the current location in Savoy.
At that time, the program's enrollment consisted of 345 preschoolers in Head Start and 65 infants, toddlers, and pregnant women in Early Head Start.
During Liffick's tenure as director, the program has moved the Rantoul and Champaign programs to facilities remodeled specifically to serve young children to accommodate enrollment expansion.
In 2010 the program added a center in Urbana.
Champaign County Head Start/Early Head Start's current funded enrollment includes 415 in Head Start and 125 in Early Head Start.
"We have served over 10,000 families in all of these years," Liffick said. "And this year marks the 20th anniversary of the county's administration of these services."
Champaign County Head Start is a program of the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission.
