Updated: winter weather advisory issued

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for a portion of East Central Illinois.

The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday for Champaign, Ford, Douglas, Edgar, Iroquois and Vermilion Counties.

For DeWitt and Piatt Counties, it's in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Two to four inches of snow and wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour are expected on Saturday.  You should take precautions while driving, make sure you have winter weather supplies at home and check on pets and the elderly.

Illinois State Police at Ashkum report Interstate 57 is down to one lane in some areas throughout Kankakee, Iroquois and Ford counties due to snow and ice. Troopers are handling several slide offs and crashes. Secondary roads are also snow covered and icy.

State police ask drivers to monitor changing weather conditions, limit travel, and be prepared to allow plenty of time to reach your destination.

Drivers are also encouraged to put extra water, food, and warm clothing their vehicle.
