Charges dismissed in campus mugging

URBANA — A Champaign County prosecutor Tuesday dismissed felony charges against an Urbana man charged in connection with a campus mugging last summer.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said she dismissed attempted robbery and aggravated battery charges against Kenichi Townsend, 18, whose last known address was in the 1300 block of Beech Street because the case against him could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Townsend was charged in connection with an Aug. 17 attack on a 28-year-old man that happened about 2:45 a.m. in the 100 block of South Wright Street in Urbana. There was a group of four people seen on video either before or after the attack.

The victim said two of the four knocked him to the ground, hit him in the head and torso, and looked for items in his pocket.

Clark said there were no witnesses to the attack and of the group of four, Townsend was the only one ever located.

His identification from the surveillance videos was in question, she said.

A warrant remains outstanding for defendant Arsenio P. Carter, 25, who last lived in the 1500 block of Thornton Drive in Champaign.
