Fire in storage area of Champaign apartment building

CHAMPAIGN - Tenants in a campus apartment building were evacuated for about a half-hour Monday night while firefighters doused a fire in a storage room.

Champaign Fire Capt. Glen Daniels said firefighters were called to 207 E. John St., C, at 11:29 p.m. and got there four minutes later.

They found a fire in the storage room in the underground garage for the three-story building. Daniels said the fire was out within five minutes and residents were allowed back in by midnight.

Daniels said the storage area is used by the property managers, not the residents.

An investigator was called to determine the cause.

Daniels estimated damage preliminarily at $5,000.
