Urbana man in custody for car damage

URBANA - An Urbana man who admitted damaging as many as 20 cars in that city in the last few months is expected to be formally charged Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court.

Urbana police arrested Sakin Demir, 43, of the 2000 block of Fletcher Street at his home Friday.

Assistant Champaign County State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said that since late summer, Urbana police have received 43 separate reports of damage to vehicles, including slashed tires and dents, in an area close to Fletcher Street.

Weber said Urbana police had develped Demir as a suspect and went to his home Friday to speak to him. They showed him photos of recent damage to two vehicles.

One was a picture of the car of a woman a living in the 1300 block of Silver Street. Weber said on three separate occasions, the latest being Jan. 18, the woman's car  tires were slashed. The other photo was of a car that had three tires slashed and dents all over it. It belonged to a man living in the 1300 block of East Harding Drive, who discovered the damage Jan. 17, after having been away since Dec. 21.

Weber said Demir admitted doing the damage to those cars and possibly as many as 20 others in the past few months.

Police arrested him for criminal damage to property and took him to jail. He remained there Saturday in lieu of $3,000 bond.
