In 1914, more than 100 teachers and officers of the Sunday School at the First Methodist Church in Champaign met at a conference yesterday about increasing membership in the school.

In 1964, John J. Desmond, a University of Illinois administrator, Saturday announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 22nd District. An attorney and a CPA, Desmond, 37, is assistant director of the UI Engineering Experiment Station. He has been a member of the UI staff since 1951. If he secures the Democratic nomination, he will oppose U.S. Rep. William Springer, R-Champaign. The 22nd District includes Champaign, Piatt, Douglas, Moultrie, Macon, DeWitt, Morgan, Logan, Menard and Mason counties. Desmond is a World War II veteran who lives at 2204 S. Cottage Grove Ave., U.

In 1999, Gibson City Area Hospital and Health Services is expanding and with the help of the Gibson City Council will issue $5.4 million in tax-exempt industrial bonds to pay for the project.
