Employee charged with stealing at assisted living facility

URBANA - A Champaign woman has been charged with stealing from a woman who was living in an assisted living facility.

Lillie M. Smith, 41, who listed an address in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, was charged Wednesday with residential burglary for allegedly entering a woman's room at Bickford of Champaign on Jan. 8, intending to steal.

She was also charged with unlawful use of a debit card and possession of a lost or stolen debit card.

Assistant State's Attorney Tim Sullivan said Smith was employed as a certified nursing assistant at the facility.

On Jan. 8 a woman living there was taken to the hospital and died several days later. Her husband discovered debit cards missing from her room.

On Jan. 14, Smith allegedly used the late woman's debit card to buy an iPad and accessories for it from Best Buy in Champaign. She also allegedly used the card at Walmart, Schnucks and area gas stations, Sullivan said.

When confronted, Smith claimed she found the woman's debit card outside her room and used it until it was declined.

Judge Chase Leonhard allowed Smith to be released on her own recognizance and told her to be back in court March 11.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Smith could be sentenced to between four and 15 years in prison.
