Not that long ago, Paul Klee was covering Illinois basketball for The News-Gazette. This week, he's reporting on Super Bowl XLVIII as columnist for the Colorado Springs Gazette (check out his Twitter feed:@Klee_Gazette). We convinced him to break away from his Peyton Manning coverage to fill us in on what it's like:

1 Super Bowl media day is a circus. There's very little football talk; players were asked (often in a foreign language) what they dreamt about last night, the eating habits of their pregnant wives and how they feel about Colorado's marijuana laws.

2 The size of the Super Bowl — added to the size of New York — is striking. Over 9,000 volunteers. Almost 5,000 credentialed media. A police escort to and from events. And Jay-Z's entourage.

3 Super Bowl parties. From the New York Jets' private shindig to Leigh Steinberg's bash — if you tell 'em you are friends with Loren Tate, you can get in anywhere.

— Speaking of the big game, online editor Mike Howie on Monday wrote of the Bears' visit to C-U en route to New Orleans for Super Bowl XX, posting photos of the Fridge and Co. on our website. Well, John Bingaman of Champaign and Julie Cox of Mansfield sent us another 20 or so photos of the Bears, mostly when they came to town. Check 'em out at We welcome more at
