Area history, Jan. 31, 2014

Today is Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. News reports from this date in history:

In 1914, there will be no tangoing at the upcoming sophomore cotillion at the University of Illinois, the Council of Administration has determined. "The Council of Administration reaffirms its conviction that much of the dancing at the present time is highly objectionable and it insists that dancing carried on with the permission of the council, either in university buildings or elsewhere, should conform to standards acceptable to the disciplinary officers of the university," the council said in a statement. But if anyone violates the rule, they could be dismissed.

In 1964, 14 Presbyterian ministers met in Monticello Thursday to form a permanent organization to support the efforts of civil rights demonstration volunteers.

In 1999, while 1998 will remain the year of the bank robbery — there were 17 in Champaign and two in Urbana — crime overall continued to drop in the two cities.
