Tuscola man sentenced to 20 years in federal child porn case

URBANA — A Tuscola man with no prior criminal record was sentenced Friday to 20 years in federal prison for possessing and distributing child pornography.

Parrish Kappes, 47, was convicted by a jury in Urbana in October of those charges.

He had been indicted in November 2012.

During his trial Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly Peirson presented evidence that on three separate occasions in August and September 2012 Kappes distributed sexually explicit videos of minors. She also presented evidence that Kappes possessed nearly 200 movie files and 2,000 images showing children engaged in sexual conduct including violent depictions of rape and torture of children under 10.

Jurors also saw pictures that Kappes took from his back yard in Tuscola of young girls dressed in bathing suits.

Judge Michael McCuskey imposed the sentence on Kappes, who was represented by Assistant U.S. Public Defender John Taylor.
