Woman battered during purse snatching in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police were looking Saturday night for two men who robbed a woman of her purse and battered her.

Sgt. Dave Griffet said the woman was waiting for a bus in a Mass Transit District bus shelter just north of the Walmart at 2610 N. Prospect Ave., and east of the Aldi store about 8:40 p.m.

A man, described as about 6 feet tall, skinny, wearing black clothing and a red scarf engaged her in conversation. As he talked, a second man, also about 6 feet tall, wearing black clothing and a blue cap, came and stood nearby.

The man with the red scarf then began punching the woman and grabbing at her purse. Griffet said the woman screamed, ‘No. Don’t take it.’ The man then overpowered her and got the purse.

Both men then ran to the southeast toward the Town Center Apartments in the 2400 block of North Neil Street, Griffet said. A tracking dog was brought to the scene but police were still looking for the pair about 10 p.m.

The woman was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for facial injuries.

A wallet was recovered along the path of flight of the robbers, Griffet said.
