18-year-old dies after car skids off a ramp at I-57/74 interchange
CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign County coroner has released the name of a woman who died in a single-vehicle crash at the Interstate 57/74 interchange over the weekend.
Coroner Duane Northrup said that Mikela K. Washburn, 18, of Paris, Ill., was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 1:09 a.m. Sunday.
According to a state police report, Ms. Washburn was a passenger in a 1999 Dodge Stratus driven by Alexander J. Morton, 28, who listed an address in Harrisburg, Pa.
Morton had been driving west on Interstate 74 and was entering the northbound ramp to Interstate 57 when he lost control of his vehicle as he traveled over ice at 11:57 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The vehicle traveled sideways before coming to rest against a utility pole.
Both Morton and Ms. Washburn were taken to Carle. Morton was listed in good condition Sunday.
Police ticketed Morton for driving too fast for conditions.
Northrup said an inquest may be held at a later date.
Ms. Washburn’s death is being investigated by the Champaign County coroner’s office and the state police.
