Causes of recent Urbana fires being listed as undetermined

The causes of two fires on Friday in Urbana are being listed as undetermined.

Urbana Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said a fire at 106 South Gregory was contained to the balcony of an apartment. He said a mattress on the balcony was involved in the fire and that investigators were not able to rule out the improper discarding of smoking materials as a cause.

Earlier on Friday, crews were called to a fire at a duplex at 2207 Philo Road. Edwards said initial reports that the fire was started by a malfunctioning snowblower were ruled out.
