Davis makes nominations for military academies

CHAMPAIGN — U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis has nominated 11 students in the 13th Congressional District, including two from Champaign County, for admittance to the U.S. military academies.

The nominations were made following an application and interview process. The final determination on admission is made by the individual academies.

Among those nominated were Ian Michael Gidcomb of Savoy, a senior at Champaign Central High School, and the son of Scott and Barbara Gidcomb, and Cameron James Deedrich of Champaign, a senior at St. Thomas More High School, and the son of Dennis and Ann Deedrich.

Gidcomb was nominated for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Deedrich was nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

"As a member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating these accomplished young men and women to our nation's service academies," said Davis. "The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military upon graduation, so I applaud these students for their decision to serve and wish them the best of luck."

Others nominated for West Point include: John Douglas Bluhm of Springfield, Tynon Cleveland of Decatur, and Hugh Mahr of Taylorville.

Others nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy include: Henry James Elik of Alton, Riley O'Connor McManus of Springfield, Cedric Volle of New Douglas and Richard Garrett Watson of Jerseyville.

Those nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs include: Erika Fulbright of Edwardsville and Kristianna Scheffel of Grafton.

To be considered for appointment all applicants must be: a U.S. citizen; a legal resident of the 13th District; at least 17 but not more than 23 years of age on July 1, 2014; single; and have no dependents. It is recommended that applicants contact the academy or academies of their choice to request a pre-candidate questionnaire, which is the first step in the Admission Office's evaluation.
