Updated: Oakwood man dies in crash

OAKWOOD - An Oakwood man was heading home from the grocery store Tuesday night when his truck skidded off the road and hit a stop sign, utility pole and tree, killing him, according to law enforcement authorities.

Duane J. Vogel, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that was at 6:33 p.m. at the intersection of county roads 900 East and 1700 North in Oakwood, according to the Vermilion County coroner's office.

Capt. Rod Kaag with the Vermilion County sheriff'sdepartment, said the accident was weather-related. He said the road was snow- and ice-packed, and Mr. Vogel lost control of his truck before it skidded off the road. He was the only person in the truck and was wearing his seat belt, Kaag said.

It's the second weather-related death in the Oakwood area in the less than a week.

Michael A. Farmer, 61, of rural Oakwood, was found dead Jan. 29 in a neighbor's yard on Carter Drive, off of Batestown Road east of the Oakwood area. It is believed that Mr. Farmer died from exposure to the elements, according to the coroner's office.

Kaag said in the few weeks leading up to Mr. Farmer's death, neighbors had seen him wandering around the trailer park not appropriately dressed for the very cold temperatures. He said the neighbor who lived in the house where Mr. Farmer was found dead had seen him wandering the previous day. The neighbor went to Mr. Farmer's residence the previous night to check on him, and he was gone, Kaag said, and the next morning, the neighbor found him in the front yard.
