No charges yet for man arrested for attempted drug purchase

URBANA — The Champaign County state's attorney's office has asked the University of Illinois police to do more investigation before it files charges against a Champaign man who allegedly wanted to buy a large amount of cannabis.

Jared Storey, 26, of the 2800 block of Heritage Drive, was arrested Thursday evening by UI narcotics detectives.

UI Detective Sgt. Joe McCullough said Storey was arrested for attempted possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

"He tried to negotiate the purchase of a large amount of cannabis from an undercover police officer and was arrested on campus in Urbana," he said.

However, Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said because no deal was consummated, he didn't feel like he had the evidence to file a criminal charge.

McCullough said police had been investigating Storey about a week.

At the time of his arrest, Storey had $1,800 cash on him.
