Admitted thief gets three years in prison

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted stealing from a truck at a Champaign business last summer was sentenced Friday to three years in prison.

Dancel Thatch, 29, of the 1200 block of West Bradley Avenue, pleaded guilty in December to theft with a prior burglary. He admitted stealing a cellphone from a truck belonging to Cramer Siding & Window, 708 N. Country Fair Drive, C, on July 14 or 15.

A separate charge of burglary alleging he broke into two trucks at the business and ransacked them was dismissed in return for his plea.

Thatch had sought a community-based sentence that included treatment for substance abuse but Judge Heidi Ladd said he apparently had not taken advantage of previous opportunities to get help.

“There has to be personal responsibility,” Ladd said. “I can’t find anything to see that he’s learned anything.”

Court records show Thatch had a juvenile adjudication for burglary as well as adult convictions for criminal trespass, domestic battery and burglary.
