19-year-old pleads in bus incident, sentenced to jail, probation

URBANA — A Champaign teen who admitted he beat up another man after they got off a public bus last fall was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation and 79 days in the county jail.

Tresor Banao, 19, who listed an address in the 1400 block of Paula Drive, pleaded guilty to a single count of misdemeanor battery for punching an 18-year-old Champaign man in the head on Nov. 18 in the course of stealing the other teen's iPhone. Another count of robbery, alleging Banao took the phone by force, was dismissed as part of his plea.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar told Judge Tom Difanis that the victim had his phone out on a Mass Transit District bus on which Banao and a younger teen were also riding. When the victim got off the bus near Second Street and University Avenue, Banao knocked him to the ground and hit him while the younger teen allegedly took the phone.

Banao was ordered to have no contact with the victim and to repay him $600. He was given credit on his sentence for 79 days already served.

Lozar said Banao had a prior adjudication as a minor.
