School board candidates announced

The Champaign school district has announced six candidates who will be interviewed in open session Thursday for the board vacancy.

Three of the six sought a school board seat last summer.

From a school district news release:

Champaign Unit #4 School District Board of Education will hold interviews for its vacant seat on Thursday, February 13, 2014. The interviews will take place in open session starting at 6 p.m. at the Mellon Administrative Center, located at 703 S. New Street.

Community members are encouraged to attend and will have the opportunity to make a public comment prior to the start of interviews.

The open seat became available when board member Scott MacAdam stepped down from his position in January. The individual selected will serve until the next Board election in 2015.

The following candidates will be interviewed:

— John Bambenek. Here is his application.

— Azark Cobbs. Here is his application.

— G. David Frye. Here is his application.

— Chuck Jackson. Here is his application.

— Mike Somers. Here is his application.

— Jonathan Westfield. Here is his application.

The six are contending for the seat vacated by Scott MacAdam.

Bambenek ran in 2012 for the state Senate seat held by Mike Frerichs, losing by a 2-to-1 margin.

Cobbs, Jackson and Westfield all applied for the school board vacancy created last summer by the resignation of Stig Lanesskog.
