Effingham man injured in I-57 crash

MATTOON — An Effingham man was taken to a Coles County hospital after crashing early Wednesday on Interstate 57.

According to a state police report, Steven E. Karolewicz, 40, was driving north on I-57 at the Mattoon exit when he lost consciousness and left the road, hit a snowbank and guardrail and became airborne. The vehicle hit several signs and came to rest several hundred feet down in a ravine.

He was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, which did not provide information on his condition.

Karolewicz was ticketed for improper lane usage. He was wearing a seatbelt.
