Man charged for attack on woman

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly punched and kicked a woman in the face Monday evening is due back in court April 1.

Dwight T. Hayes, 28, of the 1400 block of Hollyhill Drive, was charged Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court with aggravated battery and battery, alleging that he caused great bodily harm to a 34-year-old Urbana woman.

He remained in the Champaign County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bond. Judge John Kennedy ordered that he have no contact with the victim, who was taken to a local hospital after the attack for severe facial injuries.

Urbana police Investigator Dave Roesch said Hayes, the victim, and two other people were socializing at a house in the 1500 block of South Philo Road about 6:30 p.m. Monday when an argument between Hayes and the woman turned physical.

"No one seems to know the reason why the argument or the fight started," said Roesch, who interviewed the four people who were present.

The victim was punched and kicked in the face repeatedly, he said. It went on long enough that one of the people present had time to get out of the house and go to a neighbor's to call the police.

Roesch said Hayes apparently did not know the victim before Monday evening. They were mutual acquaintances of another woman who was present.

If convicted of aggravated battery, Hayes faces penalties ranging from probation to two to five years in prison.
