Woman sentenced to jail, probation for use of debit card

URBANA — A Champaign woman who stole from a client of a facility where she worked has been sentenced to two years of probation and 29 days in jail.

Lillie M. Smith, 41, who listed an address in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, pleaded guilty Wednesday to unlawful use of a debit or credit card, a felony. She admitted that on Jan. 14, she used the debit card of a woman who was a resident at Bickford of Champaign on South Staley Road.

Smith was employed as a certified nursing assistant at the facility. On Jan. 8, the victim was taken to the hospital and died several days later. Her husband discovered debit cards missing from her room.

The charge to which Smith pleaded guilty said she used the woman's card to buy an iPad and accessories.

Other charges of residential burglary and possession of a lost or mislaid credit card were dismissed in return for her guilty plea.

Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said Smith had a prior conviction for driving under suspension.
