Loda man indicted on arson charges in summer house fire

LODA — A Loda man has been charged with arson for allegedly starting a fire in a home he was renting last summer.

Darin S. McCall, 48, was indicted by an Iroquois County grand jury for one count of arson, a Class 2 felony, in connection with the Aug. 25, 2013, fire at 409 E. Jefferson St. in Loda.

The state fire marshal's office determined the fire was intentionally set, spokeswoman Milly Santiago said last year. Arson investigator Kevin Smith testified to the grand jury.

McCall was arrested on a warrant Feb. 10 and was released from jail after posting $1,000 of his $10,000 bond. He is due in Iroquois County Circuit Court at 9:30 a.m. March 10.

McCall was renting the single-story home owned by Diane Eilts last year, according to Loca Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Jerry Sanders.

The fire started sometime overnight inside the home, said Eric Starkey, an investigator for the Iroquois County sheriff's office. He said the home sustained smoke damage throughout, with fire damage mostly contained to one room.
