Man arrested over sex crimes

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man accused of raping a runaway girl in his home last month is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Joseph Brownfield, 28, of the 500 block of Edgebrook Drive, was arrested about mid-day Thursday at his home on a warrant issued earlier in the day charging him with several sex crimes.

Brownfield is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl repeatedly between Jan. 4 and 6.

The allegations came to the attention of Champaign police on Jan. 9 when the girl received treatment at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said the girl, who is the subject of a dependency case in Champaign County Circuit Court, told police that she ran away from her foster home on Jan. 3 and called Brownfield, whom she's known for seven years. She went to his home that day.

Clark said the girl reported that on the morning of Jan. 4, Brownfield allegedly had sex with her against her will and refused to let her leave his home. She told police that it was the first time that had happened and that she considered him a family friend.

She reported additional sex acts with Brownfield happened on Jan. 5 and 6, Clark said.

It wasn't until Jan. 9, when she was picked up by police for being a runaway, that she told anyone what had happened to her. She was taken to the hospital and police began their investigation.

Clark said the teen gave consistent statements to police and during a later forensic interview at the Child Advocacy Center.

The prosecutor said police talked to Brownfield last week and he admitted having sex with the teen but said it was her idea.

Brownfield was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Bond on the warrant was set at $500,000. If convicted of the most serious of the charges, he faces a mandatory prison term of between six and 30 years.
