Subway restaurant in Bement robbed for second time in a month

BEMENT — Bement police are investigating the second robbery of the town's Subway sandwich shop in just over a month.

Police say a man entered the Subway at 133 N. Macon St. at 8 p.m. Thursday, threatened the cashier with a knife and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. It is similar to a robbery at the same location on the morning of Jan. 16, which also included a theft by knifepoint.

Bement police officer David Lansford said he is investigating whether the two robberies are connected. He added it happened quickly.

"He was in there for almost exactly a minute," said Lansford, after reviewing video footage.

The robber was wearing a mask. He is described as white, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, medium build and wearing a dark jacket, green baseball cap and dark colored jeans.

Piatt County sheriff's deputies and Atwood police helped at the scene. State police crime scene investigators were also called in.

Anyone with information on the crime is encouraged to call the Bement police department at 217-678-2351 or 217-621-3566, or the Piatt County sheriff's department at 217-762-5761.
