Winter storm watch issued
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Champaign, Vermilion, Douglas, Edgar, Coles, Shelby, Moultrie, Macon, Piatt and DeWitt conuties from Saturday evening through late Sunday night.
Here is the weather service's multimedia briefing on the expected storm. And here is the daily briefing in an 8-page pdf file, also from the National Weather Service.
The weather service said snow will begin on Saturday evening and continue into Sunday. Six to ten inches of snow are possible across Central Illinois. In the Champaign-Urbana area, WDWS Meteorologist Greg Soulje said seven to nine inches of snow are possible. Wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour are also possible with this storm.
These conditions will make travel hazardous. If you have to travel, you should drive slowly and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Also be sure to have winter weather supplies in your home and vehicle, and check on pets and the elderly.
