Pair arrested for vehicle burglary after owner gives chase

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign County sheriff’s deputies arrested two men early Saturday for burglarizing a truck after its owner chased them.

Sgt. Jeff Vercler said about 2:10 a.m., a deputy was on Staley Road in west Champaign when he saw a vehicle going 75 mph in a 45 mph zone. He stopped the driver, who reported he was pursuing two men he’d just seen inside his pickup truck at his Bondville home.

The deputy gave a description of the suspect car to fellow deputies, who stopped the car about a block away.

John Ziegler Jr., 22, of the 1500 block of Castlebury Lane, and Brandon Thomas, 20, of the 1000 block of Moreland Boulevard, were arrested for burglary to a motor vehicle.
Vercler said deputies recovered $8 cash from them that was believed stolen out of the unlocked pickup.

The two were expected to be charged Monday.
