WDWS Radio personality receives Broadcast Pioneer Award

A long-time employee of WDWS Radio is being honored by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. Jim Turpin, the host of "Penny for Your Thoughts", a live call-in program airing Monday through Friday on WDWS, has been named as a recipient of the prestigious "Broadcast Pioneer Award".

The Pioneer Award recognizes a broadcaster who has been the cornerstone of their community for several decades.  It also recognizes a broadcaster for their important contribution to their station, their career, and their local community.

Dennis Lyle, President and C-E-O of the Illinois Broadcasters' Association, surprised Turpin Thursday by calling into his program and making the announcement live on-the-air.

Turpin is a University of Illinois alum, and has worked at WDWS since 1980. He served as the play-by-play announcer for Fighting Illini football and basketball games for more than 30 years, until he retired from that spot in 2002.

He will receive the "Broadcast Pioneer Award" at the annual conference of the Illinois Broadcasters Association to be held in Champaign in June, at the I-Hotel.
