Hoopeston shooting investigated as homicide


HOOPESTON — The Vermilion County coroner’s office has identified a man who was shot to death at a Hoopeston hotel Sunday night as 40-year-old Bruce L. Eldridge of Hoopeston.

Coroner Peggy Johnson said the death is being treated as a homicide. She said her office, Hoopeston police and the Vermilion County sheriff’s department continue to investigate the shooting.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at The Downtown Motel, 200 E. Main St., shortly after 9 p.m., according to Chief Mark Drollinger.

Drollinger said the 40-year-old man was found dead in one of the rooms. Witnesses said suspects fled the area on foot and then in a vehicle.

An autopsy will be conducted today.
