Loda man charged with soliciting girl, 14

PAXTON — A 35-year-old Loda man has been charged with a felony for allegedly using Facebook to ask a 14-year-old Paxton girl to go on a date with him.

Roger M. Gibson Jr., 35, was charged March 6 in Ford County Circuit Court with one count of solicitation to meet a child, a Class 4 felony punishable by up to three years in prison.

Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane said an investigation determined that Gibson contacted the girl on Feb. 28 through Facebook and asked her to go with him on a date to see a movie. Bane said Gibson did so while knowing the girl's age.

The girl did not go on the date, Bane said.

The girl's mother reported the incident to police March 1, and Gibson was arrested March 5.

Gibson was released from jail after posting 10 percent of his $7,500 bond. As a condition of his bond, Gibson was ordered to have no contact with girl.

On Monday, Judge Paul Lawrence appointed public defender Harvey Welch to represent Gibson, whose preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. on March 17.
