Pressure from board fails to sway Rantoul mayor on firing

RANTOUL — Mayor Chuck Smith has not allowed public pressure and disagreement from the village board change his mind about the firing of Village Administrator Bruce Sandahl.

And following a 90-minute executive session Tuesday night, Smith said his decision to terminate Sandahl's contract would remain in effect.

The decision came despite four of the six village trustees indicating during the open portion of the meeting that they do not support Sandahl's firing.

Trustees Roger Jones, Jeremy Reale, Jennifer Fox and Chad Smith all rose to their feet when the Rev. John Bonacorsi asked for people in the meeting room to stand if they disagreed with Sandahl's ouster. Trustees Tony Brown and Hank Gamel remained seated.

Bonacorsi was one of several members of the public who spoke, asking Smith to change his mind.
