Mugging charges against Champaign man dismissed

URBANA — A Champaign County prosecutor Wednesday dismissed felony charges against a Champaign man accused in connection with a mugging last summer on the University of Illinois campus.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said she dismissed attempted robbery and aggravated battery charges against Arsenio Carter, 26, of the 1500 block of Thornton Drive because there wasn't enough evidence to link him to the Aug. 17 crime. In late January, she also dismissed those same charges against co-defendant Kenichi Townsend, 18, of Urbana, for the same reason.

Both had been tentatively identified from surveillance video as being in a group of four males who knocked a 28-year-old man to the ground in the 100 block of South Wright Street in Urbana and hit him in the head and torso. Someone also went through his pockets.

Carter was arrested in Champaign on March 4 on a warrant that had been issued Aug. 28.
