Police investigating I-57 fatality

MATTOON - An Effingham County man who was thrown from a pickup truck on Interstate 57 was killed Wednesday night when another motorist drove over him.

Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers identified the man killed as Leroy A. Alwardt, 70, of Mason, which is just south of Effingham.

Illinois State Police at Pesotum said Mr. Alwardt was driving his Ford Ranger pickup south about 8:30 p.m. when he lost control, drove off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail and rolled over.

Mr. Alwardt was thrown from the truck as it rolled and was lying in the road when a southbound semitrailer tractor truck, trying to avoid debris from the crash, ran over him.

Police said the semi driver, John W. Pruitt, 54, of Holladay, Tenn., was unable to stop. He was not hurt.

The accident remains under investigation by state police. Schniers said as he walked on the interstate while tending to Mr. Alwardt, the road was slick.

Schniers said Mr. Alwardt had contacted his wife that he was on his way home from Champaign.
