'Breastmilk' documentary to be screened free at Orpheum

URBANA — "Breastmilk," a documentary about breast-feeding, is coming to Champaign.

It will be shown free at 2 p.m. March 23 at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum, accompanied by events for moms that will start at 1 p.m.

Cristy Wittig, a lactation consultant at Presence Covenant Medical Center, said it's important for the success of breast-feeding moms that they get the information and support they need about breast-feeding, and this event will help bring that together.

"We feel like it's something that can bring those moms there and say, 'Hey, you've done an awesome job so far, and we want to support you even more,'" she said.

The documentary features both the successes and challenges of breast-feeding, Wittig said.

It is described as a look "with unexpected humor, with an unflinching camera, with some guilt and some pain" at what breast milk truly means.

The hospital is sponsoring the screening, along with Lehan Drugs, with additional support from Christie Clinic, the La Leche League, the Loving Support Breastfeeding Task Force, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, Medela and Tree of Life Doula Services.

Included in the March 23rd program will be baby-friendly businesses and agencies on hand to answer questions, raffle prizes and free popcorn and snacks to go with the movie.
