Man arrested in campus mugging

URBANA — A Champaign man was arrested for allegedly robbing a man of his phone as he walked on an Urbana street early Saturday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Matt Banach said a 21-year old Urbana man and a 21-year-old Champaign woman were walking on Goodwin Avenue near Springfield Avenue when they saw Max D. Supple, 23, of the 500 block of West Green Street, Urbana, yelling at someone.

Not wanting to become involved, they walked by Supple quickly, only to have him run up behind them and grab the woman in a bear hug, lifting her off the ground.

The man helped free his female friend, then Supple allegedly attacked the man, holding him down. The man dropped his cellphone and a headband during the struggle and when Supple let go of him, Supple allegedly picked up the items and refused to give them back.

Supple then allegedly chased the man but stopped when the man got close to the UI police department.

The man found that Supple’s keys and a part of his retractable key chain came off during the struggle. He gave them to police.

Banach said police later found Supple lying on a sidewalk near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Harvey Street, highly intoxicated.

On him, police found the Urbana man’s stolen phone and headband.

The Urbana man identified Supple as the person who mugged him while Supple identified the keys as his.

Judge Brian McPheters allowed Supple to be released on his own recognizance.

He is expected to be formally charged Monday.
