Autopsy: Man killed by blunt-force trauma in Rantoul crash
URBANA — Au autopsy performed Monday indicated that a Mahomet man died over the weekend from blunt-force injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the outskirts of Rantoul.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Jason L. Cuppernell, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision of a semitrailer truck about 4:40 a.m. Saturday near Rantoul's industrial park.
Rantoul police Sgt. Justin Bouse said a semitrailer driven by Jose Estrada, 26, of Schererville, Ind., was facing south on Evans Road and turning east onto U.S. 136 when a car driven west on U.S. 136 by Mr. Cuppernell reportedly ran the red light and hit the semi.
Northrup said it appeared that Mr. Cuppernell's car went under one of the trailers and came out the other side. He remained in the car.
He said an autopsy indicated Mr. Cuppernell died from blunt-force injuries to the head.
He said toxicology results are still pending. An inquest may be held at a later date.
Estrada was not hurt and was not issued any tickets.
