VG schools have new dean, new principal
VILLA GROVE — Villa Grove has a new principal, a new dean of students and a new debate about its athletic co-op with Heritage.
At this week's busy board of education meeting:
— Stephen Killion Sr. was named to the newly created position of principal for grades K-12. Killion currently teaches language arts and social sciences at Cowden-Herrick Junior High. It will be the first administrative position for Killion, a teacher for nine years.
Starting next school year, the district will have one principal — rather than one for K-8 and another for the high school. The administrative reorganization, which also adds a dean of students position, is expected to save the district over $100,000.
— Robert Beck, an elementary school teacher at Villa Grove for seven years, was promoted to the dean of students post. Beck has also coached football, track and basketball at Villa Grove.
— The school board is also seeking public input on its newly formed sports co-op with Heritage High School. Rory Gunter, a parent of two athletes, addressed the board with his concerns about the number of players on the boys' basketball and baseball teams. "There are a lot of really good players sitting on the bench," he said.
Gunter urged the board to reconsider the co-op for those sports with high participation and to conduct another community forum to gather feedback and discuss future plans.

"I am watching it very carefully and the board will see everything that comes in," Superintendent Mary Ann Manos said.
